Doors at nine on a Tuesday is a late start, and the bill for 8 September 2015 was built around it. Akon was the name on every poster. He was also the last of four acts, which meant the evening ran long by design, with three other performers standing between the door and his set.

The show was billed as Akon live in concert at Crocks. The radio station Magic 99.9 and the promoter Loffredo & Associates presented it, and two local businesses appeared as sponsors: the Prince Arthur Waterfront Hotel & Suites and The Waterfront District. Tickets first went on sale as a limited pre-sale, ahead of the general release.

The bill below the headliner

Karl Wolf, BAE and Peter Jackson were listed as special guests. The announcement gave the names and nothing more, with no running order and no set lengths, so the sequence on the night is not part of the record. What the listing does show is the shape of the evening: a pop and R&B bill with three support acts under an international headliner.

Karl Wolf is a Canadian singer who worked in dance-pop. BAE and Peter Jackson appear on the poster with their own web addresses, the usual sign of acts that promoted themselves as well as the show. Beyond that, the announcement says little about either, and this page does not guess.

Two ways in

There were two ticket levels. General admission cost $45, and buyers paid a further $5 online service fee on top. A second tier at $95, again with a $5 fee, added a photo opportunity and an autograph. Tickets were sold through the promoter’s own online store.

The event was 19+ and photo ID was required. In Ontario 19 is the legal drinking age, so the age line was the licensing rule of a bar-format room, not a preference. Anyone under it had no way in, however many tickets a group held. Old ticket screenshots make more sense with that in mind.

Where the songs came from

Akon was born in St. Louis, Missouri, and spent part of his childhood in Senegal before his family settled in New Jersey. His chart run began with “Locked Up” from the 2004 debut album Trouble, and carried on through “Smack That” with Eminem and “I Wanna Love You” with Snoop Dogg, both in 2006. “Right Now (Na Na Na)” followed in 2008.

He also ran a label, Konvict Muzik, and used a second imprint, Kon Live, to help bring Lady Gaga to a wider audience around 2008. That production and label work is a large part of why a name like his could sell a club show in a small northern market years after the singles peaked.

By September 2015 the hits were seven to eleven years old. A club date in northwestern Ontario was a stop where those songs did the work, and the ticket structure reflects it: one price for the room, another for the extras.

Why a headliner like this came north

Thunder Bay sits on the north shore of Lake Superior, roughly 108,000 people in a region where the next large city, Winnipeg, is around 700 kilometres west. Toronto is more than a thousand kilometres away by road. Touring acts reach the city on a long western or northern routing, and a date here is rarely an accident of the schedule.

Radio partnerships were one way of making such a date work. A station name on the poster put the show in front of listeners for weeks before the doors opened, and a hotel sponsor with a waterfront address tied the night to the downtown core, a few blocks from where Crocks stood on Cumberland Street South.

A Tuesday slot fits the same pattern. It suited a touring schedule that had to connect larger cities on either side, and it left the weekend rooms in those cities to other acts. Nothing in the announcement says this outright, so treat it as the practical reading of the calendar, not a stated reason.

The other hip-hop, dance and pop nights at the club from this period are listed on the shows page.
